Maskless in Athens

I am 86 years old and fully vaccinated and boosted. Nevertheless, I try to be cautious and considerate of others. I always wear a KN95 mask when indoors in public places. My mother-in-law died of Covid and I would like for her to be the only person in our family who so succumbs.

But today I was at Kroger buying a few groceries and there were lots of people there not wearing any face covering despite the notice on the door saying, “Masks are required”. These people were in every age group and seemed indifferent to the risks they were taking for themselves and more importantly for others.

While our Republican state legislature passed an ordinance forbidding mask mandates in the capitol, Columbus, mask requirements are still in effect here in Athens. Nevertheless, so many people are ignoring the requirement that is seems to be ineffective. I am hesitant to confront the maskless individuals having heard reports of violent altercations when such matters are broached.

When people say Trust the Science, we don’t have to ‘trust the science’ to know that jumping off a tall building is injurious to your health. We don’t have to invoke the law of gravity to know that you will fall to your death. With so many people having died of Covid, how much science do people need to recognize that it is the unvaccinated (and maskless) people who are doing the dying. It is a matter of common sense.

Are these the same people who refuse to wear seat belts?
